While walking home today, i saw a flying pig. then, the ground felt extremely cold, so i surmised that hell was freezing over. i think these unnatural phenomena can be explained by the fact that i stand a pretty good chance of passing maths. without careless mistakes, i think my maximum mark is around 70+. but factoring these mistakes in, i'd say 50-60+. not too bad. if this prediction is true, it'll be a close to 150% jump in marks.

in the interval of maths and SPA (lasting about 5 hours for our class), 6 of us went to toa payoh for a bit of racing. it seems that after playing maximum tune for such a long while, my racing has improved. at least i don't crash as often. but it was great stress relief, even though it was between exams.

physics SPA also went pretty well. nice points, nice straight line. ok, a bit of doctoring was involved, but i doubt it's noticeable. this experiment was pretty easy, as compared to what we've been doing for the past few weeks.

all in all, today has been one of my better days. with tomorrow comes a possible visit to cat high, as well as maybe more racing. chem papr next. about 3 more to go and we're done.

I'm too lazy to rewrite everything after evil blogger ate my post. basically, econs was fun because whatever i spotted came out. yay. read this article...food for thought.

This week, 14-year-old Shay Clark was expelled from a Christian private school in California because her parents happen to be lesbians. And deservingly so, because we all know how much of a threat lesbian parents are; what with the fully loaded lesbian firearms they pack in their children's lunch boxes and how, by sending their child to a Christian school, they're clearly devil-worshipping heathens -- sub-humans bent on the destruction of all things American and Christian.

But that's not all. In a long overlooked section of the Bible called "Jesus H. Christ's Rad Blog", the Son of Man's online journal which he kept for a short time then abandoned when he lost interest, we find this passage dated March 10, 32 A.D.:

"Gays and lesbians shall be pwn3d for the rest of eternity. For they are really goddamn disgusting."

I know what you're saying. Jesus didn't invent the word "pwn3d". True that. It's probably an error in the translation. He did, however, invent the phrase "true that". What Mel Gibson didn't tell us is that when Jesus was asked whether he was the King of the Jews, Jesus responded, "True that! Um. I mean, it is you who say that I am."

Would it strike you as odd that Jesus never condemned homosexuality? In fact, as my friend John Christian Plummer pointed out this week, he never mentioned a single word about it. Probably because he was too busy saying things like, "Blessed are the peacemakers," and "Blessed are the poor." Here's an actual Jesus quote which is interesting:

"Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man."

Within this sentence, Jesus condemns bigotry and persecution in his name, which today happens to define the policies and actions of the modern right-wing who ironically embrace Christianity -- the teaching of Christ -- as part of their strategy. Throughout his documented life story, Jesus’ most incendiary comments and actions were aimed at, 1) Satan, and 2) the men who mixed business and religion. Does that second item sound familiar? Nary a single word which denounced same-sex marriage -- well, except in the Bible used by the right-wing and Christian Fundamentalists known as the "Fake Bible Which We Made Up To Suit Our Bigotry: Large Print Edition".

The Bible contains a lot of hogwash which, in a modern context, has little or no validity. The Bible tells us that anyone who comes into contact with a woman who is menstruating must do penance. The Book of Leviticus, the section of the Bible which is the cornerstone of the frightening Christian Reconstructionist movement, condemns homosexuality under pain of death. It also condemns the touching of pig flesh on Sundays... under pain of death. That would certainly make football interesting. Whoever touches the ball dies.

One of the most dominant arguments against same-sex marriage has been the dictionary definition of marriage: "The legal union of a man and woman as husband and wife." That's a pretty weak argument, no? The dictionary? At one point in time, a definition taught us that a sperm cell contained a fully formed little man called a "homunculus". Just because George W. Bush cites the dictionary definition of marriage as "between a man and a woman" doesn't make it right and justified. This from the same man who thought "misunderestimated" was a word.

The Republican movement against same-sex-marriage is purely a political tactic which feeds off the unjustified fears of easily influenced Americans -- as we witnessed during last year's presidential campaign. Gay marriage does nothing to threaten you or your marriage, but the anti-gay right-wing wants to make you feel that way in order to consolidate their power. The Republicans have told you that there's a Toe Monster under your bed and if you don't vote for them, the Toe Monster will get your toes! Ooga booga! You allow yourself to buy into that? Seriously?

Plainly put, I can't figure out how our government, founded on freedom, can continue to make attempts at legislating bigotry. Ironic that the same officials who have sent our soldiers do die for the freedom of the Iraqi people (in-so-far as a theocracy will allow freedom) have also engaged in an effort to forbid the freedoms of an entire group of Americans. Ironic, but not surprising. Our elected officials have been the catalyst behind some of the most horrible events ever recorded, and most of those have been in the name of morality, fear, and ignorance. You know the list. It includes genocide and slavery, to name a couple. So in that respect, this latest effort is no surprise, however difficult it is to grasp.

But Christians? I'm ashamed of you. I'm ashamed to have spent the first 18 years of my life in your service. I'm ashamed of the dollars I put in your collection baskets every Sunday. Shay Clark's parents wanted her to be raised amongst your teachings and you've inexplicably found a loophole to exclude her. But maybe, like our president, you're only a Christian as a convenience to somehow justify your hatred and nearsighted worldview. If you actually read that book on which you base your life, you'll find that Shay Clark's lesbian parents should be the absolute very least of your worries. What you'll find in the teachings of Jesus is that, if anyone, you are your own worst enemy. God's speed.

POSTSCRIPT: Christian Fundamentalists and their ilk should probably rethink the effort to blur the line between Church and State. If history has taught us anything, it's shown that policy is cyclical. If you want your Republican government to legislate your dogma, be aware that when the next regime takes over -- the group which has typically explored tax hikes as a means of reducing the federal deficit -- your tax-exempt status might be in jeopardy. If you want the separation of Church and State to be permanently blurred, prepare to be taxed. In case you didn't notice, our government loves to pursue anyone who might help pay the bills. And without a clear separation, that means you.

Staying up all night long to study is something i haven't done since almost a year ago. last night/this morning, i was able to pull that feat off again, mainly thanks to my mp3 player and liberal doses of caffeine. yes, the process of coffee ingestion has already begun. evil promos force us to stretch our limits, through both natural and artificial means. funnily enough, i still had the energy for an outing today, and didn't fall asleep while watching The Myth. yes, i went to watch a movie in promo season. i can practically see readers recoiling in shock, horror, utter disbelief, or any mixture of the three. anyway, it's a pretty good show, lots of action sequences done in a uniquely Jackie Chan way...although it does get confusing at times. i strongly recommend it.

after spending hours with my econs notes, i think i stand a higher chance of passing, say 75%? that is, if what i studied actually comes out. i'm hoping. and hoping, and hoping, and hoping. oh well. i don't think i'll do that badly. just have to read notes a few more times before sleeping. that's when memory retention is most efficient.

today was also the first time in a long while when i actually got to put life on hold and watch the sunrise. i've concluded that the coldest temperature we can achieve without technology occurs between 5-7am. maybe one of the reasons i'm not feeling particularly tired now is because of the fresh morning air...although i'd be inclined to think that it's effects aren't that long-lasting. i took lots of photos as well. seems like i'm obsessed with sunrises and sunsets. actually, it's more like anything natural and beautiful. i like to think of myself as a semi-pro photographer, though my photos may say otherwise - for better or for worse.

speaking of photos, my phone is dying. for those unable to see the link, the photos were taken with my phone due to lack of proper equipment on the spur of the moment. back to my phone, the keys are taking turns to malfunction, and the joystick almost always refuses to scroll left. i suppose i should expect this since it's over a year old, and has been subjected to a few accidents. i guess this is a sign that it's time to change. sadly, i have to wait for another few months, until my line expires. but who's complaining?

i saw the design for the class t-shirt, and i like. i noticed that "4 a's with style" was featured rather prominently on the front. call this a weird source of inspiration, but i'm determined to live up to that name. this slogan/tagline has been hovering around the class since term 2. everyone knows that it exists, it's just that we don't use it often. and i don't know why i'm blogging about this. i'm sorry; it's really really random. moving on, here's a song i rediscovered sometime during my econs marathon:

Jon Bon Jovi - Blaze Of Glory

I wake up in the morning
And I raise my weary head
I've got an old coat for a pillow
And the earth was last night's bed
I don't know where I'm going
Only God knows where I've been
I'm a devil on the run
A six gun lover
A candle in the wind

When you're brought into this world
They say you're born in sin
Well at least they gave me something
I didn't have to steal or have to win
Well they tell me that I'm wanted
Yeah, I'm a wanted man
I'm a colt in your stable
I'm what Cain was to Abel
Mister catch me if you can

I'm going out in a blaze of glory
Take me now but know the truth
I'm going out in a blaze of glory
Lord I never drew first
But I drew first blood
I'm no one's son
Call me young gun

You ask about my conscience
And I offer you my soul
You ask if I'll grow to be a wise man
Well I ask if I'll grow old
You ask me if I've known love
And what it's like to sing songs in the rain
Well, I've seen love come
And I've seen it shot down
I've seen it die in vain

Shot down in a blaze of glory
Take me now but know the truth
'Cause I'm going down in a blaze of glory
Lord I never drew first
But I drew first blood
I'm the devil's son
Call me young gun

*Guitar solo*

Each night I go to bed
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
No I ain't looking for forgiveness
But before I'm six foot deep
Lord, I got to ask a favor
And hope you'll understand
'Cause I've lived life to the fullest
Let this boy die like a man
Staring down a bullet
Let me make my final stand

Shot down in a blaze of glory
Take me now but know the truth
I'm going out in a blaze of glory
Lord I never drew first
But I drew first blood
And I'm no one's son
Call me young gun
I'm a young gun

GP today. the exams have officially begun. to say that the paper was tough would be an understatement. i want to stick a rusty knife into the person that set the paper. the essay was still manageable (i did a question on whether choices are always good), but the compre section murdered just about everyone. ironlcally, it was about death. passage 1 was pretty entertaining, about "dying (literally) to be different", but with too little (and well-hidden) points for the summary. on the other hand, passage 2 was beyond comprehension...i didn't even know what the author was trying to say. not only that, the AQ was tough as well. all in all, we're screwed.

econs essay is on monday!! arrgh. not good. i'm probably going to pin all my hopes (and grades) on CPE, market structure, demand/supply, production/cost, and market failure. totally going to ignore labour, at my own peril. something tells me labour will be tied to one of the questions that we have revised repeatedly in class and lectures, thus screwing us all over. i'm probably being over-suspicious, but who knows? i think i'll end up kicking myself when i see the questions.

oh well. i just went for a walk at about 8+. sitting down at the park, i noticed 2 snails crawling near my hand. call me a *nasty word for cat*, but i freaked out. it's not often i see 2, yes, 2 quite large snails crawling/sliding about near me.

that's about it for now, i have to go post on my cousin's joke blog.

Can we all say "promos in a couple of days"?

now can we scream at the top of our voices?

i feel sad. and very very scared. the days i have to worry about are next monday, thursday, and the wednesday and thursday 2 weeks later. because these are the econs, maths and physics days. throughout the lessons today, i've realized (, yet again,) how inadequate i am in maths and physics. especially in gravitation and almost all topics in maths. you know, i have this odd impulse to tie someone to a rotating dartboard, blindfold myself, and start throwing knives at him. sadly, i can't do that for 2 reasons. one, because it's against the law, and two, the person i want to tie up is typing this entry now. still, i'm in the magical class of 1T20, and we're supposed to possess the uncanny ability to pull miracles out of thin air.

so anyway, there's very little time left. since GP starts at around 2, this means that there are only...38 hours and 8 minutes left. 2288 minutes. 137280 seconds and counting. whoopee.

i need to get away from it all. maybe go to the beach? or somewhere less urbanized, which, in singapore, is pretty difficult to find. maybe i should skip school tomorrow and make a trip to east coast. after all, there's nothing that important going on, and it's a 5pm day. any one of the reasons alone is good enough justification not to be in school, but nevertheless, i shall be there due to moral obligations.

oh well. no use worrying at such a late hour. here's something interesting:

After one week, my notwantingtogotoschoolitis has pretty much cleared up by itself. school isn't so bad, especially with great classmates and friends. but promos begin next friday. not good. have to go into studying overdrive. as of now, my studying statistics are:

GP: 80%
Chinese: 45%
Maths: 30%
Physics: 35%
Econs: 55%
Chem: 75%

to be honest, i'm not too confident of getting an overall B aveage for the year, because in order to do that, i have to get a high B for almost all subjects this time round. that appears to be virtually impossible, even though heavy hints are being dropped for a few subjects.

i know i only have myself to blame for this, but i think maths will kill me. it may a bit too late to try and remedy the situation now, but still, a bit of effort is better than nothing. with enough effort, say 5 hours of study per day, i may turn that potential F or O into an A. but let's not aim that high yet. i'll be content with a B or C, as long as it's a good pass. so, it's time for the usual routine, ie. expectations:

GP: B3/A2
Chinese: C5/B4
Maths: D/C
Physics: C/B
Econs: C/B
Chem: B/A

well, that's about it. i'm off to do some maths. and here's a really really romantic song.

Leann Rimes - Looking Through Your Eyes

Look at the sky, tell me what do you see,
Just close your eyes and describe it to me.
The heavens are sparkling, with starlight tonight,
That's what I see through your eyes.

I see the heavens each time that you smile,
I hear your heartbeat just go on for miles.
And suddenly I know my life is worthwhile.
That's what I see through your eyes.

Chorus:
Here in the night, I see the sun.
Here in the dark, our two hearts are one.
It's out of our hands, we can't stop what we have begun.
And love just took me by surprise,
Looking through your eyes.

I look at myself, and instead I see us.
Whoever I am now, it feels like enough.
And I see a girl who is learning to trust,
That's who I see through your eyes...

Here in the night, I see the sun.
Here in the dark, our two hearts are one.
It's out of our hands, we can't stop what we have begun.
And love just took me by surprise,
Looking through your eyes.

And there are some things we don't know,
Sometimes a heart just needs to go.
And there is so much that I'll remember,
Underneath the open sky with you forever...

Here in the night, I see the sun.
Here in the dark, our two hearts are one.
It's out of our hands, we can't stop what we have begun.
And love just took me by surprise,
Looking through your eyes...
Looking through your eyes.

I was just reading my cousin's blog a while ago. she's 21 this year, and has been taking chemical engineering in the university. she's going to graduate sometime within the next 2 months, i think. anyway, her latest entry was about saying goodbye and how things change with time. basically, it was on transition.

the last part of the entry sounded so...optimistic, so full of hope. it makes me, well, not exactly jealous, but sort of wishing that i could do that also. i mean, i can imagine putting myself into my cousin's shoes, except with a different group of friends and a different degree. i bet it feels wonderful, to be able to look forward to the next chapter of life so eagerly. sadly, there are still about 7 or 8 years before i can really experience that first hand.

it seems that i don't have any real soulmate-y friends. you know the kind i'm talking about; where something like a telepathic bond connects two people. it's interesting to observe two people bonded like that. they can hold entire conversations without speaking. but oh well. there's plenty of time for that later in life.

well, i guess it's time for me to be off. there's a long econs essay plan waiting to be done.

-thingy of the day: Nothing for now.-

"I had a pretty freaky dream yesterday night/this morning. somehow, i had the impression that grading was held at 9:00pm in some remote area in the east. then, i left the house with plenty of time, but saw nobody when i arrived. turns out the actual time was 7:00pm. after stunning for a while, (i think this is when i began to wake up) i remembered that it was scheduled for 2:00pm at chinese high. since everyone else attended, i was thinking about how screwed i was, being the lowest-ranked person in CJC and SJI...and woke up. guess the shock was too much to bear, even in my sleep."

That was from an entry started on friday. i never quite got around to finishing it, but it shows how nervous i was then. now, in retrospect, all that nervousness seems so unnecessary. grading was manageable. not exactly a breeze, but not moving mount everest either. i'm fairly (95%) confident of being promoted. i must say that i got lucky. they tested 2 of my favourite throws, so there was fairly little problem there.

i think i'm down with an illness. not physical, but psychological. the official name is notwantingtogotoschoolitis, or simply, post-holiday blues. one week is really too short. after this, there's another 2 weeks before promos start. looking at it like this really makes life suck. i mean, a week of holiday is one of the best reasons to mug. and yet, i've only done a minimal amount of studying. i need a miracle, and it will most probably have to be self-made.

on the flipside, i got my zen micro!! it's silver and charging now. i don't know if i should give it a name or anything, as some of my friends have done to their audio devices. let's see... if i were to name my micro, i would call it/him...1X10^-6? maybe referring to it as "my mp3 player" would be better, no?

you know, when i went to scout the warehouse on thursday, there were people already queueing for the star buys. at that time, i thought it was natural since the star buys started then. but when i went there today, at 8 in the morning, the queue had about quadrupled in length, and there were a few familiar faces at the start of the line. seems like we'll never be rid of the kiasu spirit. to me, giving up 3 days' worth of time for a $150 discount is simply not worth it. are 24 hours only worth $50? that translates to each second being worth a fraction of a cent, which kind of contradicts the whole "time is invaluable" concept. but oh well. i won't deny that i was tempted to wait overnight as well, but after weighing pros and cons, the conclusion was that waiting would be moronic.

so, off i go to start a new week. with any luck, it'll pass so fast that i won't feel the pain.

"Another boring day of slacking" is not the ideal way to start an entry.

yet sadly, that describes today pretty well. and i'm guessing that that description will fit for the majority of the week. let's see what interesting things will come up for the next 5 days:

- getting hair sliced
- *FINALLY* getting my zen micro
- grading on saturday (get passport-sized photos)!!!
- going out on sunday

that's pretty much it. even after they are spread out, i still have a day of boredom. of course, i haven't put "studying my ass off" into the schedule, and that will take up lots of free time.

for some funny reason, it doesn't feel right to go back to school in the holidays. maybe that's why i'm reluctant to attend holiday lessons. it's either because school's further from home and travelling is a pain, or simply because "school" and "holiday" are polar opposites. anyhow, i'm thankful that we have no more lessons for the remainder of the week.

i really have to study more. promos are drawing ominously closer and there's still a pretty nonchalant attitute in the air. it's sad, really. my motivation for studying has been really low. need to buck up soon.

as mentioned earlier, grading takes place this saturday. honestly, i'm kind of nervous, seeing as this is my first grading. hopefully everything goes well for everyone. but i heard they fail you immediately if you screw your breakfalls up. so here's hoping i don't. i think i have a pretty good idea of how to do the required stuff, so i'm thinking my passing probability is about 80%. oh well.
